Welcome Message
From ARVTSC President and Host Club Leadership
Dr. David Bridgeman
ARVTSC President
Greetings and Welcome to Maui.
I hope everyone is as excited as I am to be spending a few days here at the beautiful Wailea Beach Resort for the annual session of the Academy of RV Tucker Study Clubs.
We learn from our esteemed treasurer emeritus, Dr. Laurie Vanzella that RV Tucker Study Club #1 held its first clinical operations in January 1976 and while formal organization of our academy occurred a few years later, how fitting that we are able to celebrate this incredible milestone of 50 years of clinical operations teaching the Tucker Protocol and advocating for gold restorative.
We couldn’t ask for a more appropriate setting and we extend our deep appreciation to RV Tucker Study Club of Hawaii #44 and the members of Hawaii 50 for coming together to offer this captivating venue.
I know we will be busy, but I’m sure some rest, relaxation and comradery will be in the mix. I thank you all for your attendance and for your undying commitment to our academy. Let’s make this meeting memorable!
Dr. David Bridgeman

Welcome Message from Host #44
E komo mai (Welcome) to our beautiful island paradise.
Maui has been my home for nearly 50 years, and it has been my son Scott’s home for his entire life. The culture that defines this island—passed down through generations of Native Hawaiian elders—is Aloha. Aloha is far more than a word; it is a way of life, practiced daily. By embracing this culture, we become better human beings, and for that I am deeply grateful. My hope is that every one of you attending the 2026 ARVTSC Meeting in Maui will experience the true spirit of Aloha during your time here.
Club #44 was established in January 1999 under the leadership of Dr. Gary Umeda. Gary had the privilege of meeting Dr. R.V. Tucker in Chicago and was inspired and insisted he and I attend the Institute course in Seattle in 1998. What we experienced there was unlike anything we had known before. The clinical sessions were long and demanding, yet we were mentored directly by Dr. Tucker himself— whose approach was kind, humble, encouraging, and never demeaning. This was in stark contrast to my own dental school experience in the 1970s.
What left the greatest impression on me was Dr. Tucker’s generosity of spirit. At the end of each day, he would invite us—his students, staying at the same hotel—to join him for dinner. I was astonished that a mentor of his stature would take the time to associate so closely with his students and make us feel so welcome. Shortly thereafter, Gary invited Dr. Tucker to Honolulu to mentor us for our first clinical sessions at his office.
In 2002, we began a joint meeting in Maui at my office with Study Club #1 from Vancouver, British Columbia. Dr. Tucker joined us for many of these meetings as our overall mentor, while members of Club #1 assisted and mentored our group. It was an extraordinary opportunity, and we were truly fortunate.
Dr. Tucker especially cherished the camaraderie of shared dinners—often highlighted by his favorite dessert, coconut cream pie. On one such occasion, my son Scott joined us and met Dr. Tucker. Scott shared his interest in dentistry and his plans to apply to dental school on the mainland. Without hesitation, Dr. Tucker offered to write him a letter of recommendation. That letter was remarkable, and Scott has kept it to this day. He is now a proud member of Club #44.
Elaine, Dr. Tucker’s wife, loved Maui and accompanied Dr. Tucker on every visit. The spirit of Aloha invited them to relax and enjoy the beauty of the island. After several visits, Dr. Tucker even began trading his signature coat and tie for Aloha shirts.
On behalf of Club #44, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the mentors selected by Dr. Tucker to guide us here in Hawaii. They have truly exemplified the spirit of Aloha and Pono—righteousness, goodness, and integrity. One of our mentors, Dr. Warren Johnson, once shared a quote that has stayed with me: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” This sentiment is often attributed to the legendary coach Vince Lombardi.
This is the third time Club #44 has hosted the annual meeting, but our first time doing so in Maui. The University of Hawaii Maui College has graciously provided outstanding clinical facilities and the use of a modern auditorium. We extend our sincere thanks to the Director, Ms. Leanne Higa, for her generous support and accommodation.
Please take time to enjoy the island of Maui—whether from the sea, with world-class windsurfing, kiteboarding, or big-wave surfing at Peʻahi (Jaws), or from the mountain, Haleakalā, whose summit rises just over 10,000 feet above sea level.
Together, we will make this meeting truly special, because we are the Tucker ʻOhana (family).
ʻAʻohe hana nui ke alu ʻia. No task is too big when done together.
With warmest Aloha,
Ted

He has lectured nationally and internationally and is a member of various dental organizations, including the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He was a part-time lecturer at UCLA, a faculty group practice member, and a past assistant director of the UCLA Center for Esthetic Dentistry. He is co-authoring the textbook, Airway Focused Clinical Dentistry: A comprehensive guide for global wellness beyond teeth, gums & joints, to be published by Elsevier at the end of next year.
Lecture Overview
In recent years, there has been increasing awareness in healthcare regarding "airway" health. With that reality comes varied ideas of what "airway-focused" dentistry means. As restorative dentists who focus on the indications, use, and delivery of direct and indirect gold techniques with a mindset of excellence, long-term outcomes may be influenced by unrecognized factors linked to "airway" health and function. This presentation will define "airway" health in delivering predictable dental restorative excellence.
The participants will learn:
- Why is it essential to evaluate the patient attached to the teeth while addressing the teeth attached to the patient
- What it means to be "airway" focused
- To understand the varied medical and dental comorbidities linked to optimal breathing and sleep
- The emerging role of dental professionals in global health and wellness
- Why "wellness" is not the same as not being sick.
- The benefits of addressing root cause versus managing disease.
Learning Objectives
- Define "airway" health in the context of restorative dentistry excellence
- Understand the importance of whole-patient evaluation beyond teeth
- Recognize medical and dental comorbidities linked to breathing and sleep
- Learn the emerging role of dental professionals in global health and wellness
- Differentiate between wellness and absence of disease
- Understand root cause treatment versus disease management
